Watch the Strand Diagnostics Overview
In 2005, Strand Analytical Laboratories was founded as a private forensic crime lab dedicated to assisting larger public crime labs with overflow casework. The company quickly built a reputation as a trusted forensics partner and helped labs around the country reduce backlog and solve more crimes in an efficient manner.
A new entity called Diagnostic ID was formed in 2008 to develop the know error® system, which added DNA matching to the diagnostic testing cycle of patients’ biopsy tissue samples to ensure specimen identity and diagnostic accuracy. Medical literature and public media reports exposed the clinical problem of specimen misidentification leading to incorrect diagnosis and unnecessary treatment and surgery. Coupling the use of forensic DNA technology with the need for medical diagnostic certainty, the founders developed the Know Error DNA Specimen Provenance Assay (DSPA) and kits for prostate, breast, bone marrow and other tissue biopsies.
To further accelerate growth and scale its operational infrastructure, the company partnered with Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong’s NantWorks in March 2012. This partnership resulted in the merger of Strand Analytical Laboratories and Diagnostic ID into one entity, Strand Diagnostics, as well as $7.5 million in series A funding to be paid out over the next three years. With the additional resources, experience and relationships accessible through NantWorks, Strand Diagnostics is well positioned to become a leader in the delivery of next-generation personalized medicine.
